Dying Planet is an eerie song, about overconsumption and answering the call for solving climate change, about logging and the air we breathe. It has a post-industrial sound, and John Clark puts in some awesome sound effects. Dying Planet was performed at the STIR Songwriters Earth Day Weekend Jam in 2006, where it was a big hit with the crowd. Since then, it has become available on the Rick Holderbee Band CD. This CD is chock full of classic rock original tunes by the talented Rick Holderbee, who takes a hand-on approach to achieve some great sound. On this CD, and in the song, the youngest musician on the Songs for the Illinois River CD is drummer Brandon Floyd, who was a high school student when it was recorded.
